Our Culture
COMMUNITY GUIDELINES
At Austin Inspired Movement, we aim to create a fun, safe, and inclusive space for everyone. These guidelines help us maintain a space where everyone feels welcome on the dance floor.
Foundation
The Golden Rules
Be Present
Put your phone away. Be in the moment with your partner and the community around you. Show up fully -- your presence is the best gift you can give to the dance.
Be Kind
Encourage others. Everyone is at a different point in their journey. Lift people up with kindness and mutual support -- celebrate progress, yours and theirs.
Be Gentle
Dance with care and awareness. Respect the comfort and safety of your partner at all times. Strong technique comes from control, not force.
Dancer Etiquette
Dancing Safely
- check_circleStay aware of couples around you and maintain spatial awareness on the floor.
- check_circleNo yanking, pulling, or forceful leads. Strong technique comes from control.
- check_circleNo aerials or lifts on the social floor. Save those for performances and practice.
- check_circlePractice good floor craft -- keep movements compact on a crowded floor and protect your partner from collisions.
Before You Arrive
- check_circleShower before class and use deodorant. Good hygiene is essential for partner dancing.
- check_circleBring extra shirts if you tend to sweat. Your partner will thank you.
- check_circleWash your hands before dancing. Carry mints or gum for fresh breath.
- check_circleWear proper dance shoes -- no open toes, no street shoes that mark the floor.
During the Dance
- check_circleDance sober. Intoxication compromises your ability to dance safely and respect boundaries.
- check_circleIntroduce yourself to new faces. A friendly hello creates a better connection on the floor.
- check_circleNo unsolicited feedback. Only give tips when asked. On the social floor, just enjoy the dance.
- check_circleEveryone has the right to refuse a dance -- no explanation needed, no pressure given.
Dance Roles & Consent
Our approach to roles and safety on the dance floor
Roles
Lead, Follow, or Both
- check_circleLead and follow roles are gender-neutral, regardless of gender identity. Anyone can learn either role.
- check_circleWe encourage switching roles to build a deeper understanding of the dance.
- check_circleChoose the role that feels right for you -- there's no wrong answer.
Consent
- check_circleActive consent is required for all partner interactions. Ask before initiating close holds or dips.
- check_circleRespect personal boundaries and physical autonomy. "No" is always an acceptable answer -- no explanation needed, no pressure given.
COVID & Illness
If you're feeling unwell or have been exposed to illness, please stay home. We follow local health guidelines and keep the studio clean. Masks are welcome and respected. Your health and our community's safety come first.
Race & Gender
Inspired Movement celebrates dancers of all races, ethnicities, gender identities, and sexual orientations. We respect and use correct pronouns. Discrimination of any kind will not be tolerated. Dance is for everyone.
Professional Conduct
Instructors and staff are held to the highest standards of professionalism, maintaining professional boundaries, respecting power dynamics, and ensuring appropriate conduct at all times.
Misconduct Reporting
All reports are confidential. You can remain anonymous if you prefer.
